WIN THE SIERRA STORYTELLING FESTIVAL QUILT! Enter
our raffle, and maybe you'll be the lucky winner of this year’s quilt: “A
Perennial Garden”.
Have you ever observed the slow but steady opening of a flower from budto full flash of color? Such has been the progress of this incredible floral quilt, created by our talented local quilters: Tove Killigrew, Grace Trotter, Marian Dockham, and Mary Moore; from idea, to selection of materials, to one patient stitch after another until it blossomed into a masterpiece anyone would be proud to own! When asked how they went about creating “A Perennial Garden”, Tove said, “I think we may have been inspired by a postcard of a flower quilt that Marian had. I brought my watercolor books of flowers and we selected ones for color and shape and what seemed possible to adapt to cloth. I had them copied and enlarged and we used them for inspiration as certainly they were not used as actual patterns.
“The flowers are garden types, found in gardens of old-timers and new. I am sure they all grow in Mary Joan's garden across the road from the North Columbia Schoolhouse, for example. “All of the material is cotton and much of it is Batik which gives a lovely variation to the leaves and petals, suggesting patterns of shade and sunlight.” Besides meeting almost every week since the last week of February, the four women have also spent many, many hours at home sewing on this very original piece. One will notice that each of the quilters has a distinctive technique, some have a classic applique style while others are more freestyle and unusual. The entire 3’ x 5’ quilt is framed in a checkerboard green that sets it off beautifully. A sleeve is sewn to the back for hanging but it can also be used as a lovely lap robe for one’s mother or grandmother. Raffle tickets will be available on site during the festival. Drawing will be held on Sunday at the Grand Finale. Winner need not be present to claim the prize.
